It’s been just a week since Frito Lay (fka Freebow) joined the family, and what a week it has been! He was a little shy and unsure when he first arrived, but I think he now realizes that this is his forever home. He has fully embraced the art of “Lay-ing” around in true beagle fashion like a professional couch potato. With three beds to choose from, he rotates between them like a true connoisseur of comfort.

Frito has discovered the joys of sunbathing in the backyard, where he lounges peacefully while listening to the cheerful sounds of the preschoolers next door. When he’s not soaking up the sun, he explores the front courtyard of our building, strutting around as if he’s a cast member on Melrose Place. His confidence is growing each day, and it’s been wonderful to watch.
One of Frito’s absolute favorite times of day is his twice-daily “chow time.” A big shout-out to his foster mom, Barbara, for setting such a great routine—he is such a good eater! Frito has also started joining me for wine tastings in West Berkeley, where he enjoys greeting people and taking in the new sights and smells—though he leaves the actual tasting to me!
Frito showed his bravery this week by making it through his vet visit like a champ. He’s now trying out a combination of injections and supplements to help him live his best life. So far, so good! In the meantime, he’s been brushing up on his culinary knowledge by watching MasterChef Junior with me, learning all about kid chefs and how judging works. He’s also made the executive decision to toss out his alarm clock and wake up whenever he pleases. Retirement mode activated!
When Frito is feeling extra silly, he flips upside down on the couch and demands belly rubs—a request that is always granted, of course. This past weekend, he had a special meeting with his future furry stepsister, a lovely 9-year-old terrier mix. He was the perfect gentleman, and they co-existed peacefully, which was such a relief and a joy to see.
We also discovered this weekend how much Frito loves being off-leash in big grassy fields. Watching him leap around with such pure joy was heartwarming. He seems to have found his happy place, and I can’t wait to see what other adventures lie ahead for my sweet boy.
Thanks,
Courtney Greene
