BetteDavisEyes

Mutt mom Carolyn tells us about her Muttville lady in this humorous tale of a day in the life of Miss BetteDavisEyes:

BetteDavisEyes

She’s got ‘BetteDavisEyes’!

This sweet creature came to live with me as a foster dog in July. By September, those endearing trusting ‘BetteDavisEyes’ had captured me, and Muttville’s Betty Cocker had a new home along with her new name. This deaf old lady, mostly cocker spaniel, naps and stretches, then checks in at my office door to see if I’m still where I was before her nap. I give her prolonged eye contact, in wordless confirmation, and she goes back to catch a few more Zs.

In mid-afternoon, she’s restless and shakes her tags, reminding me it is time to go out for our daily smell-athon on her leash. When she slows down on the uphill stretches of the neighborhood, and gives me a certain look, I pick her up and carry her, giving her old heart a rest and giving me a bonus cardio workout.

Most of the day, when she’s not scarfing up chicken, she lounges or curls up on one of her beds, opening her eyes to say hi to anyone who enters the room. Unless she’s desperate, she waits for me to go with her out to the yard. When she’s ready to go back in, she waits for me again, then sprints up the stairs ahead of me, happy to be alive. Even with the promise of food in her dish, she respectfully acknowledges the resident feline.

When I return after being gone for a couple of hours, she dances around like a pup. We’ve both found a new best friend.
