It was less than 2 months ago, that I picked up Harley from Norcal Aussie Rescue in Sacramento, an 11yr old red merle, surrendered, along with his younger pack mate, by the family of his owner who had recently passed, to the Chico Animal Shelter.
In the days that followed, Harley settled in with us, so happy to find himself in another loving home, he would follow us everywhere, and “kiss” (lick) you whenever you let him… he was a happy old dog, and an easy one to love, and very loving, especially when his stubby tail wagged with joy!
We thought we would have years together, but a couple of weeks ago he was diagnosed with chronic Pancreatitis, and admitted to hospital, for days we would visit him day and night, only to watch his health change daily.
He was so happy to see us each time we visited him, and so sad to see us leave him there each time… this was not the golden years I had hoped we would share.
Hoping against all odds that he would recover days went by, but finally when there was no respite in sight, and only more tests, with no guarantee of a recovery, our hearts broke but we decided to end his misery and suffering last Monday.
As we sat with him through his last moments here with us, I gently held his head and kissed him on the nose goodbye, and he kissed me back with eyes full of nothing but love…
We will miss you Harley, we love you with all our hearts, breaking now without you.
Love, Larry, Holly and Lolli (dog)
