Charlie Bear came to me at Christmas, a beautiful present. Nobody could tell his exact age because he had been starved to about half the normal weight for a Samoyed. He was weak and his partially collapsed trachea along with a cough made him sound as if he was taking his last breath. But there was life and light in his eyes! I melted for this boy. He was very old and even though he had been neglected and suffered so much, he still wanted to give and receive love. With tenderness we nursed him, the cough went away, and he breathed easier. My pack welcomed him, we all felt protective of our sweet boy. He shared beds with all the dogs and soon with me as well.
One night I awoke to Charlie having a seizure, I held him in my arms and told him we would do everything we could for him. The news was not good…aggressive cancer in his nose. I feel so honored and lucky to have shared Charlie’s last few months and I KNOW that he had a happy joyous time with us – filled with trips to the beach and warm blankets straight from the dryer. We miss you, Charlie Bear!
