Thank you for the year with my sweet boy Kurtie. I hope we get many more!
Another dog never really crossed my mind, as I already had a 6-year old dog Lucy, who was perfectly happy being an only child and insists on being my only best friend.
But by happenstance-on a lucky click-a face popped up that I couldn’t stop thinking about.
Kurtie had the perfect two-toothed smile and the best little beard. He showed little interest in me upon meeting but did so well I was happy to win him over. It was clear he was used to going off with any old human and I’d have to teach him that he had someone to belong to.
When he first arrived we had a lot to figure out. He built his own potty spot to keep him safe from the stairs and learned when we needed diapers. I learned he loves food, scritches, and sleep. DEAF DOGS ARE GREAT!!
He cried every time I left for the first week or two. It was heartbreaking but after that, he felt secure and hardly made a peep.
It took my Lucy about two weeks to realize he was not just visiting. Although she still doesn’t think of him as her friend, she treats him about the same as the cats. Lucy and I are a team, and Kurtie is our grandpa that we look after. Some mornings, Lucy and I sneak out early before Kurtie wakes up, so we can have alone time and Kurtie doesn’t feel left out.
Kurtie has made new friends, been to parks and beaches and restaurants. We have gotten to celebrate one gotcha day, two Christmases, a happy Halloween and so much more.
I can’t believe I didn’t get to know him for his whole life and I often wonder if there’s someone out there missing him. I hope they know he’s loved, warm and safe.
I may only get to spend a few years with him but he will live forever in my heart.
Thank you Muttville for keeping him safe until we could find each other. We belong together.♡
