Rogers (fka Flapjack) crossed the Rainbow Bridge this past Monday after complications due to cancer in his liver and adrenal gland.
I’ve included the last two photos and the first two photos I ever took of him – our time together bookended by the joy of a car ride, wind in his ears, sun in his face.
I adopted Rogers as a senior dog from Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, and used that as an excuse to live as much life with him in the unknowable amount of time we had. I threw him birthday parties, took him to work with me, brought him along on as many adventures as I could. He was my favorite travel companion.
Through this, Rogers taught me how to love without restraint. It’s the greatest lesson he gave me, and one of the most important I think I’ll ever learn. I let him into my heart and he curled right up (he was always great at making himself at home). That spot in my heart stings something fierce right now.
But while the pain will fade, love remains, and I am left with a heart that loves better, loves bigger, because of how I loved Rogers, and how I let him love me.
June 5th would have been our 4th Gotcha Day. A big thank you to my community who helped me love Rogers so hard and who are supporting me through this period. I am so grateful to have shared such a special sir with so many

Meet Flapjack! Wow we’re in love with this little dude! He’s such an easy-going, happy guy with lots of joy to give. He’s great with other dogs and is best friends with everyone who meets him. He has short little legs and a funny, heartwarming trot. His energy indoors is nice and mellow, but he definitely enjoys a good walk around the neighborhood and would make an excellent adventure buddy once he finds his forever family!
