Mango (fka Cowgirl)
Mango came to us on March 16, 2020 – the eve of the pandemic lockdown. My partner and I had just decided to adopt a senior dog and Muttville was scrambling to place as many dogs as possible. Mango arrived limping, wearing a cone, with stitches up and down her abdomen. Her foster wasn’t sure exactly what happened to her, but he knew that he couldn’t keep her any longer because of the impending lockdown. We agreed to keep her for the night and fell in love immediately. Muttville told us the next day that she had recently been hit by a car, which is how she ended up at the shelter. She had also never been spayed, so she had that done too. During that procedure, they found several cancerous mammary tumors and removed them. Muttville gave us the option to give her back, but as a breast cancer survivor myself, it felt like fate. So Muttville added Mango to their hospice program and we added Mango to our family.
For the next 2+ years, she thrived. She recovered from the car accident and we walked 3-4 miles a day together. She was my shadow, laying right behind my desk chair every day as I worked from home and following me wherever else I went. She lived the California indoor/outdoor lifestyle with her very own doggie door, smelling all the smells that blew by while she laid under her favorite bottlebrush tree. She slept by my side when I had a serious back injury and could only sleep on the floor. She never left my side when I was devastated by both of my sisters dying within 3 days of each other in 2020, and did the same for Jamie when her brother passed away months later. The past 2+ years were difficult in many ways, but Mango was a constant source of joy and love.
We thought we had many more years with Mango, but liver cancer had other plans. She was the sweetest dog, with the cutest “Sheltie smile” you’ve ever seen. We miss her terribly but feel so lucky to have had her in our lives for 2+ years. She saved us just as much as we saved her.
Thank you, Muttville, for that fateful day and for everything you do.
