Baby Ruth and Piano Man

Foster mom Stephanie penned this sweet tale she titled
“One Tale of Two Tails and Six Names”:

Baby Ruth and Piano Man

All was not well. After a cruel and neglectful life of puppy production, Mattie and Shelty were unceremoniously discarded at the shelter. Once their failing health limited their ability to turn a profit, it was not worthwhile to keep them around. And so it was that exactly one year ago they clung tightly to each other, terrified of the unknown. At their age and in their poor condition, there was no hope for them. Until Muttville saved their precious and important lives.

“All will be well,” we whispered to them. As part of the healing process, they were promptly renamed. Baby Ruth and Piano Man. Both were in urgent need of medical attention and Sherri gave the green light to “take care of these babies, do whatever it takes.” Leaning on each other for support, they bravely worked their way through it all. Weeks turned into months as they patiently awaited their forever home. Not an easy adoption in any way, the common belief was that they would become permanent residents in their foster home. Yet as tempting as it was, we held onto the hope that there was a home out there for them. A home where Baby Ruth would be carried upon command, where Piano Man would receive the special TLC he needs for his seizures and where they would be accepted as they are. This happened for them.

All is better than well. Heather and Mike welcomed them into their home and hearts. This is that perfect home, the one we imagined for them. The little babies now have their forever names. Daphne and Charlie. Daphne begins her days by delicately sipping foam from lattes. She is a sassy and demanding toothless wonder who thinks the world revolves around her. And it does. Charlie receives the best care possible and spends much of his time hero-worshiping brother Winston and cuddling with sister Jada. He relishes his hugs and kisses, his little tail finally swishing back and forth with joy. They go to the beach. They play with toys. They eat carrots and bok-choy. They sleep under countless layers of blankets. They are happy. Heather and Mike are an encouraging reminder of all that is good in this world. And thanks to them, life is finally beautiful for Daphne and Charlie. Look at them now.
