If you love all things tall, dark, and handsome, have we got the doggy for you! Steampunk is our resident Black Russian Terrier, a rare breed outside of Russia and a total sweetheart wherever he is. He is a gentle giant who will approach you to say hello, snuggle up, and get some pets. And the great thing is, he’s so tall you don’t even have to lean down to pet him! He has such a lovely, mellow energy – you can just sense right away what a nice person he is. We think he will get scooped up very quickly, and boy does he deserve a loving home!
Here’s some notes from his foster:
Steampunk is a loving gentle giant with the biggest black eyes and the cutest nose. We’ve been fostering him for 4 days now and from day one he’s been the sweetest doggie.
He loves scratches on the head and neck and will politely ask for more by placing his big paw or resting his chin on your lap. If you sit on the ground with him he’ll lay down and plop his big head in your lap for more cuddles. And if you can’t see it in his face, you can tell he’s a happy dog because his little tail is always wagging to and fro.
He definitely likes his walks and keeps a comfortable pace. At times he gets up to a nice trot, which it’s still fairly slow, but slows down if told. Unsure of the distance he can walk, we’ve started off slow, but yesterday he did a morning and evening walk both about 30 minutes each with no problem. He’s an incredibly easy dog to walk considering his size. He never pulls on the leash and does not stop to mark while walking. Occasionally he wants to go in a different direction than we are walking but can be persuaded with a tasty treat or head scratches.
We have carpeted stairs in our house and he does not want to walk up them. We haven’t pressured him and maybe as he gets healthier he’ll be more inclined. He does however maneuver the handful of stairs in the backyard easily and has helped himself onto the couch a couple times. We bought Steampunk a nice big bed and since then he’s never hopped onto the couch,he loves spending the day nestled up there.
He is extremely smart and picks up things quickly. By our 3rd walk he knew exactly which house was ours. He also knows basic commands and either already knew "high five or was a very quick study.
Steampunk has gotten along great with our dog Archie who is a considerable size smaller and younger than he, a 31 lb Australian Labradoodle that is 14 months old. He also met some of the neighbor dogs who he’s greeted with friendly sniffs. He’s proven to do very well with dogs of all sizes and ages. Throughout the day he will roam the backyard, lounge around the house, or go on walks with Archie.
He is food motivated and very interested in anything happening in the kitchen. He’s been great at taking his medication that I’ve either hand-fed or put into his food. He’s extremely gentle when taking small snacks out of my hands. He is potty trained and hasn’t had any accidents.
We’re delighted to report that Steampunk is currently in a loving and caring home!
