Spike

#7955
Boston Terrier
Male
Medium (20-50 lbs)
Status: Adopted

Spike is a 7 year old Boston Terrier. Spike was the companion dog to two loving elderly parents, who unfortunately both passed this year. He is a total love-bug and is going to make his new family very happy!

Spike knows basic commands, and we are working with him on not jumping up on people’s legs for food, or begging for food at the dog park. Spike is house trained and well mannered. He will bark at dogs/people walking by the front window, but does call off when told. This is the only time he really barks. He loves to sleep and be near his person when they are working at home or the office. He doesn’t make any sounds while he is resting during the work day. He sleeps through the night in his comy bed, and can be left alone in the house with no issues. He does love getting into bed in the morning and curling up with you on the couch.

Spike is extremely food motivated and a wizard at getting into people food left out on low tables or in easily accessible areas. So his owners must be constantly aware of this.

He enjoy s riding in the car and going for walks (gets very excited when the leash comes out) but when at the park, isn’t interested much other than standing near his people. He has a tendency to bark at other dogs (typically other smaller dogs) if they get too close or rush him, and we are working on his leave it commands as well as recall. He needs a house with a yard so he can have his own space.

Spike is currently being fostered with 2 German Shepherds, and doesn’t mind larger dogs. He shows no signs or resource or food guarding and shares bowls with both the male and female GSD’s. He does love his space so he could be the only dog in the home and be completely happy.

We think Spike would do well in a big hearted, loving, calm natured home (he’d prefer a home with not kids) with guardian(s) who like ( s ) to shower a dog with love, go for long walks but don’t need to go to the dog park. He loves lounging in a sunny spot inside . Spike has been recently diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease. He will need to be on meds for life in order to keep his cortisol levels in balance. Before this diagnosis, Spike’s initial symptoms were extra calcium deposits at his skin level, as well as thinning of his hair. We are working on discovering the correct medication levels, but so far the meds are working well, and the deposits are receding and fur is growing back. His lack of fur does cause him to always be a bit colder, so he wears his R2-D2 jammies around the house and vests and jackets when he goes outside. So cute!

Spike definitely has the stubborn personality of a Boston Terrier, but he is the much low er key version and we don’t know if it’s from the meds or because he lived in a retirement community with two 90 year old parents, but he is a sweet boy who shows his emotion when you get home as well as if you have food! He does have a prey drive for birds, so we don’t know how he would react in a home with cats.

Spike is estimated to be 7 years young and weighs 24lbs.
