Not all heroes wear capes—some have scruffy tails and charming faces.

Spelunker is a black poodle mix who may not be able to see the world in the usual way, but he feels it in every happy wag of his tail. He’s mastered the art of finding the perfect spot to settle in, where he can listen to the world around him and soak in familiar sounds. Once he gets the lay of the land, he navigates like a seasoned explorer—always ready to trot off on a mission, whether it’s sniffing out hidden treats or greeting new friends with his signature happy wag. He’s small in size but huge in heart, peppy and sweet, and loves hanging out with other dogs. And let’s talk about that scruffy tail—it’s a statement piece all on its own. It’s got more personality than some reality TV stars, and honestly, it deserves its own fan club.

Here are some notes from his foster:

Spelunker is a gentle, mellow, old man. He doesn’t seem to be vocal, sleeps a bunch, enjoys sunbathing, finishes all his food, let’s you carry him, and loves treats. He’s happy to be around people, happy to hang by himself. Best of all he’s as soft as a plush teddy bear, with cute teddy bear eyes too!

- He’s fine with well behaved children who understand he’s blind and needs to be approached slowly. He really likes people and they love him!

- He can do a few steps, just be patient with him and let him know there are steps. I stomp and say “steps” then praise him when he steps up or jumps down.

- He needs to wear a belly band in the house but after speaking with Lauren Hauptman last week I’m working on getting him to both pee and poop outside. He currently only holds his bowel movements for outside. He’s had just a few accidents in my home with his pee.

- He would do well in a home with a fenced/enclosed yard space. He was able to navigate my friend’s yard confidently with no issues! He really enjoys being outside.

- He is only vocal when he’s excited about treats or wants to move around more outside. Once his little personality comes out he’s so fun!
