Big dog lovers, do we have a treat for you! Saxon, a shepherd mix, hasn’t stopped smiling since he walked into Muttville, grinning his big doggy grin with his tongue lolling out. You’ll be able to pick him out of the crowd, as he stands head and shoulders over our other mutts (weighing in at a whopping 70 pounds!), and he looks oh so happy to be here. Saxon is the perfect dog for outdoor adventures, so if you’re looking for a hiking buddy, he would enthusiastically like to apply. Leaving dog hair behind like pixie dust, Saxon wants to make sure that everyone receives a souvenir of their encounter, but he’s hoping someone will take him home. Are you looking for a large loverboy? We’ve got him!
Here’s some notes from his foster:
After nearly a week in foster, Saxon is showing what a gentle and affectionate boy he is, and what a wonderful family member he’ll make for a lucky family.
Saxon is very calm in the house. He sleeps in his bed near me while I work in the home office, often stretching out comfortably and letting out big sighs of relaxation. When I move around, he’ll lift his head to check on me, calmly observe for a moment, and then settle back down.
He bonded with me quickly and likes to follow me from room to room. Saxon is a very loving dog who enjoys being close to his people — he’ll gently lean against you or rest his head on your legs (or really any available body part!). I’m fairly certain he believes he’s a lap dog. He has also started giving my husband and me sweet kisses and happily leans in for pets and even belly rubs.
Saxon is housetrained, walks nicely on leash, and has been wonderful meeting people on our walks. He politely ignores other dogs and seems to enjoy sniffing and exploring more each day. His appetite is good and he’s settling into a routine nicely. I’ve only heard him bark a couple times. He sleeps soundly in his bed, which is next to my bed.
He’s also starting to show his playful side. In the mornings he’ll grab a toy and bring it over to invite me to play. He enjoys fetch — and drumroll — he even brings the toy back! He doesn’t know “drop it” yet but happily lets me take the toy so I can throw it again. Another adorable Saxon quirk: when he yawns it sometimes sounds like he’s talking. There’s definitely a little “voice” in there, which just adds to his sweet personality.
Saxon will benefit from some basic training, but he clearly has that classic shepherd intelligence. He’s attentive, responsive, and already easy to guide both on leash and around the house. We just started working on “sit” today. He’s a sensitive boy who prefers to be near his people. He does whine a little if he realizes I’ve moved to another room, so he’ll likely do best with adopters who enjoy having a loyal companion nearby.
