The symbol of love and commitment. Ruby has been the sweetest little lady since arriving at Muttville. Right now, she is taking it slow since she just lost her owner unexpectedly, but with everyone giving her an abundance of love she will be able to understand that life continues and she is going to be ok. We understand that Ms. Ruby can conquer stairs and she even enjoys a nice short walk around the ol’ block. She will prosper in a home with kids, other dogs, and a cookie jar filled with the most delicious treats. Just don’t give her too many! Ruby has a butt like a dump truck, but her body is extremely soft and squishy. The kind of bod that you may never stop hugging. If you have ever dreamed of having a black lab, or just want to give Ruby giant hugs every day for the rest of your life then come take this lovely girl home!
Here’s some notes from her foster:
Ruby’s real name is Ruby Sweetheart. She is a gem of a dog just waiting for the right person to love her forever. She is an absolute joy to have around. She is super low-key, an excellent companion, and while she has some mobility limitations we’re working on and a lot of weight to lose, she is super easy. One of my easiest fosters yet.
Despite her robust figure and recent knee surgery, this girl loves to go! Walks are her favorite thing (besides hot dogs). She is super determined, and I believe her weight will come off easily now she is receiving the right medical attention. We are taking it easy, a block or two twice a day for now. I think she would go much farther, but we are taking it slow and steady.
Ruby is currently holding out for hot dogs (this is the only food she will gobble down without suspicion to take her pills, so a few small bits conceal her daily meds). I offer her the Just Food for Dogs multiple times a day which if hungry enough, she will eat. In time, hopefully, she will forget her life of excess and settle into a healthier diet. (Don’t think she has a choice!) She also loves a good carrot treat.
Ruby is pretty quiet but does love a good doorbell bark!
She knows a full range of commands – sit, down, come, stay, etc. Her recall is great.
She loves people and is easy and gentle with all, young, old, and furry. She co-exists with other dogs beautifully. Doesn’t care in the slightest who is nearby. She did warn a nearby intruder (another foster dog in my home) when she gave a short, low growl while begging for food in the kitchen.
She sleeps (prefers the ground to the dog bed) well. She is potty trained for outside. No accidents here! She can do 1-2 stairs but doesn’t love to do them, and I don’t blame her.
One thing to note, Ruby does seem to have a soft, mourning soul. Her life has been turned upside down with the loss of her guardian, so I believe the adjustment is being dealt with with silent stoicism. She is happy a lot, but a few small subtitles let me know she isn’t 100% sure of her surroundings. And really, what rescue dog is at first? (She nudges to be pet and likes it but will turn her head away during, etc).
Overall, Ruby is just the characteristic gentle, loving black lab we imagine.
