When it comes to our sweet lad Montgomery, the word rescue might be an understatement. A little potato bun of terrier ancestry, his journey to Muttville began when he was pulled from the frigid waters of Lake Merritt by a good Samaritan. The whirlwind that followed left him safe, warm and part of a friendly pack, but also a little shy and shaky. He’s fond of a good blankie and gentle affection, gets along fine with other dogs, and is quickly leaning into the wonders of love and security. Also, he’s adorable. What he seeks now is a forever home full of compassion, patience and kindness. It is exactly what he offers in return. Montgomery is a special boy destined for a special human. Could it be you?

Here’s some notes from his foster:

Montgomery is a sensitive boy who has been through so much and yet shows so much resilience! Meeting new people and animals can be really challenging for him, but he thrives when given the space to explore and approach at his own pace. When he’s ready to trust you, he will talk to you with little whines and paw at you to ask for pets. It’s the sweetest thing!

While he is tolerating living with other animals that respect his space, he would probably be happiest as a solo pup (or with just one or two other animals that truly just leave him alone).

Monty is house trained, but he drinks a lot of water so he does need potty breaks several times throughout the day in order to avoid accidents. He can be left home alone for a few hours with no issues. I haven’t tried crating him, but he’s been left in a baby gated area and in a bathroom with no concerns. He can be a bit of a picky eater, but once you find something he likes his appetite is pretty consistent. He doesn’t show any signs of food guarding or separation distress!

Monty really enjoys short, frequent walks but when he is getting tired he will come closer and lean into you to ask to be picked up. At the park he enjoys barking at and half-heartedly trying to chase squirrels. Silly guy! He does really well in the car and mostly sleeps through the night on his own. He can do some stairs but not all so his people should be prepared to pick him up as needed.

Montgomery is looking for a soft place to land for the end of his life filled with patience, and gentle kindness and spoils. He is truly such a special dog that I know will bond with the right family and bring them so much joy!
