Meet Koda Koda is a beautiful, loving, almost 7-year-old Australian Shepherd/ Border Collie Mix (~65 lbs) who has been a beloved member of our family. Sadly, he’s struggling to adjust to life with our toddler, and we want to explore finding him the right home where he can truly thrive. We adopted Koda from a rescue that minimized some of his challenges, but with consistent positive reinforcement training, he’s made significant progress. He’s learned impulse control, reduced his reactivity toward other dogs, and has been working on desensitization to children. On walks, he does well—even around other dogs—as long as he’s supported with praise and treats. That said, Koda isn’t suited for urban life or for living with young children. As a herding breed, the unpredictable movements of toddlers are especially stressful for him.
Could Your House be Koda’s Ideal Home?
• No children, no cats, and no other dogs (he might be okay with one other dog? he is dog reactive and has a strong prey drive).
• A home in a rural area with a large property where he can run, dig, and chase squirrels.
• A family who understands herding breeds, respects their intelligence, and can provide him with both physical and mental stimulation.
• A family who enjoys and prioritizes engaging with their dog for a minimum of 1.5—2 hours a day—he loves scent work, puzzle feeders, and training sessions and likely would love barn hunting/ herding (he’s less suited for activities like dock diving, since he’s wary of deep water).
Koda Loves:
• Swimming in shallow water, hiking, and beach time with sticks.
• Snuggling up for belly rubs (he’s very affectionate).• Learning new things—he’s as smart as a whip and thrives when given a “job.”
Koda is house-trained (never had an accident) and will happily sleep in his crate at night if allowed to go in on his own terms. His personality is best described as a “teenager”: strong-willed, sassy, but deeply loving with the right guidance. He needs a firm but kind hand—he responds to respect and positive reinforcement, never force.
He’s in great health, is neutered, up to date on all his shots, and his teeth look great (he’s gotten a dental chewy every night since we’ve owned him). He has some residual scar tissue from ACL damage, so shouldn’t do high jumping when playing tug or long runs.
We love Koda dearly and are heartbroken to have to rehome him. But we believe it’s only fair to find him a family who can give him the space, stimulation, and love he needs to truly thrive.
