How do you prepare for a 60-pound American bulldog named King Smash who has the heart of a baby angel and the manners of a British butler? You make space in your life, on your couch, and in every corner of your heart, because he’s moving in emotionally and there’s nothing you can do about it. At 10 years old, he’s mellow, polite, and an absolute master at looking lovingly into your soul until you hand over snacks or belly rubs. He enjoys light exercise and many cuddles, not to mention a healthy dose of yummy treats. He’s friendly with all, gentle with intentions, and fully prepared to steal your heart using zero force and maximum charm. He may be named King Smash, but his real superpower is melting hearts on contact!

Here’s some notes from his foster:

Oh my goodness, where do we even begin with King Smash (or just “Smash,” as we call him)? This boy is truly one of a kind. At first, he can be a little reserved, but when he finally gives you a tail wag and gently bats you with his paw, you’ll know you’ve earned his love.

Smash is quietly affectionate in the sweetest way. He loves to sit next to us on the couch, lean his weight into us, and offer his paw as a little reminder that he’s ready for pets. His fur is so soft, it’s almost impossible not to keep petting him.

Behind his serious (and hilariously grumpy-looking) bulldog face is the gentlest, most loving soul.

Smash is the perfect roommate. He’s totally trustworthy when left home alone and he is fully potty trained. He spends his days napping on the couch or stretched out in a sunny spot until we get home. He rarely barks (though he makes up for it with plenty of snoring), takes his meds and eye drops like a pro, and accepts treats with the best manners. He’ll even give you his paw on request because he’s such a gentleman.

On walks, Smash is an absolute dream. He likes short strolls through the neighborhood, handles the San Francisco hills like a champ, and passes people and dogs with calm confidence. If someone stops to say hi, he’s always happy to get pets from his admirers.

He recently joined us for a busy city street fair and he handled all of the noise and attention without any stress. Smash is also a great patio pup; he’s perfectly content to hang out at restaurants (especially if he gets a bite of your brunch). And he loves car rides! He’s always ready to hop in and come along for the adventure or to help you run errands.

Most of the time, Smash is a laid-back couch potato, but every now and then he gets bursts of energy. He’s a big boy who plays like a bulldog. He is loud, silly, and full of personality. He’ll growl and grumble during tug-of-war, but it’s all part of his goofy play style. Sometimes he even tosses his toys in the air and catches them all by himself which is ridiculously cute.

Smash currently lives with our senior female dog, and they peacefully bop around the house together and nap side by side on the couch. He can be a little selective about his friends, but he’s shown that he can peacefully coexist with the right doggy friend.

If you’re looking for a gentle, funny, loyal companion who’ll make you laugh and melt your heart every day, Smash is your guy.
