Hamlet may be one of Shakespeare’s tragedies, but this gray and white land hippo is all comedy. This goofy giant can usually be seen sporting a huge grin from ear to floppy ear, and he doesn’t lie down so much as gracefully flop onto his side with a resounding thud. A friend to all, Hamlet gets along easily with dogs, cats, and humans, making him a favorite here at Muttville HQ. We love the big guys, and Hamlet is very gentle, taking treats with a dainty posture you’d expect from a much smaller dog. His favorite place is curled up on the couch, and while he can occasionally be coaxed off for a walk, the couch is where his heart is. Is your couch feeling a little empty?

Here’s some notes from Hamlets foster :

Hamlet is a big, lovable guy with a gentle soul. He loves his people and will happily soak up all the pets anyone is willing to give him. He’s wonderfully easy to have around. His mobility is a bit limited, but he still enjoys walks around the block and is excellent on a leash—he doesn’t pull or bark and isn’t reactive. We’ve had him in an apartment setting and he has done great – he’s quiet, rides the elevator like a pro, and always waits to potty until we are outside.

He spends most of the day snoozing on our couch but gets genuinely excited anytime the leash comes out for walks. His tail wags profusely whenever he sees us and being petted is his favorite thing. We have a resident dog (a small senior) and they get along great – they basically ignore each other. Overall, Hamlet has been a joy to have around – he is loving, affectionate, and as sweet as they come.
