Blue Ridge, a cream and mahogany chi mix with the face of a bear cub, is a veritable swag bag of doggie goodness. He’s a spry oldster with puppy energy, a curly tail, and a second career as a private investigator, which, in his case, means he subjects all objects, animate and inanimate, to a full sweep of sniffies. It’s a volunteer gig that gives him a sense of purpose and the rest of us an opportunity to become his latest best friend. Blue likes other dogs, climbs stairs, enjoys a walk (many sniff ops) and never stops smiling. It’s a such pleasure to meet him. Imagine taking him home!

My favorite thing about Blue Ridge is how chill he is. He never barks — not at the doorbell, not at other dogs, not even at squirrels. He just has this calm, steady presence that makes the whole house feel peaceful. I think he will make a great companion because he’s always nearby without being needy. At home, he’s either napping in his bed, hanging out on the couch, or quietly following you from room to room.
He loves going on walks, but he’s just as happy keeping you company during a lazy afternoon. He’s the kind of dog who fits right into your daily rhythm. The most endearing thing he does is the “follow.” He won’t beg or nudge you he’ll just quietly appear in whatever room you move to. Go to the kitchen? Blue Ridge is in his bed nearby. Go to the bathroom? He’s lying outside the door. It’s like having a calm, furry shadow. Also, when he’s really relaxed on the couch, he’ll slowly melt sideways until his head is hanging off the cushion and he’ll just stay like that.
A perfect day for Blue Ridge starts with a nice long walk in the cool morning air no rushing, just lots of sniffing. Then back home for a big nap in his bed. Afternoon means hanging out on the couch with you, maybe getting a few ear scratches. He’d follow you around as you go about your day, then end with another short walk before dinner, and finally curl up at your feet while you watch TV. No drama, no barking just peace and company.
